Turning a Dresser Into a DIY Coffee Station and Kitchen Storage

Last year, we turned a thrifted cabinet into a coffee bar, and it worked great for a while. However, our plan all along was to turn a different, larger area of our kitchen into a DIY coffee station. This area would give us more room to fit our coffee maker, mugs and supplies.

We just needed to get a few little projects done, first.

We finally completed those projects recently, and I’m so happy with our new coffee station! It was a relatively low cost addition to our kitchen, and solved so many problems, too.

Sharing is caring- Pin It!

How It Started

When we moved in, here is how this area of our kitchen looked:

These two cabinets are essentially our pantries, and the window looks into our sunroom- a remnant from before the sunroom addition!

The cart was left here by the previous owner, and while it is cute, the cream color didn’t look good with the white kitchen cabinets. And, I’m not a fan of open shelving to store a lot of stuff- and we needed to fit a lot of stuff here!

Also, there was no electrical outlet here, so we couldn’t plug in a coffee maker. Kind of a deal breaker.

Additionally, a big issue we have with our kitchen is the lack of drawers space. We don’t have many drawers and they’re all REALLY shallow- like we can’t fit a gallon Ziplok bag box in them unless its laying on its side. And things like utensils get stuck in them ALL THE TIME (which is just slightly rage inducing!)

So, it made sense to add a cabinet in our kitchen that had a bunch of drawers, and could also work as a coffee station.

A custom cabinet wasn’t in the budget. Also, we couldn’t use anything too tall, since there’s that window in the way. After a lot of research, we bought a dresser from Amazon and made it work.

And, its been the perfect solution!

Turning A Dresser Into A DIY Coffee Station and Kitchen Storage

Dressers are the unsung heros of home storage, in my opinion. I love using them not just for clothes, but for crafting supplies, our homeschool books, you name it!

We found a children’s dresser on Amazon that fit the width of the section between the two cabinets. We took a chance that the white paint would be close. I figured if I couldn’t find something that matched exactly, I could always color match it like I did with our IKEA Nordli cabinets in our window seat project.

Luckily, this dresser matched the cabinet colors exactly! No painting necessary.

Here’s how it looked once I got it all put together:

Super dark photo but, you get the idea.

The dresser came with plain white, round drawer pulls. We swapped those out for the same pulls we have on our other kitchen cabinets, simple black bars.

These were left here by the previous owner and have been super helpful for projects like this!

Daniel added an electrical outlet right above the dresser and under the window, and I painted the wall SW White Dove and added a valance to the (interior) window.

Lastly, we added a butcher block counter to the top of the dresser.

We have butcher block in our kitchen, and the previous window seat had the exact same material as our counters. When we replaced the window seat, we saved the butcher block to use in other projects.

We cut it to size, and attached it to the top of the dresser.

Adding the butcher block gave us a much wider countertop here, in addition to tying this area into the rest of the kitchen.

And, it’s ready- our new DIY coffee station with plenty of extra kitchen storage! Seriously, those extra 6 drawers were a life saver. Not only do they store our coffee supplies, but they also have our glass containers, kid cups and plates (so they can easily reach them!) and foil/plastic wrap/Ziplok bags.

Fits everything we need with room to spare.
Our DIY Coffee Station matches the other cabinets in our kitchen.

Coffee Station Essentials

Coffee Maker

We’ve had our Jura for a couple years now, and while its a large investment up front, it has been absolutely worth it for us. It keeps us from buying coffees (usually, unless I’ve been potty training a toddler or something equally unpleasant and feel like I need a little treat.)

And, it works really well when we have guests and go through a lot of coffee- its fast and convenient!

Coffee Mug Holder

I found this coffee mug stand on Amazon, and it works great for holding our favorite mugs. Saves on counter space, too!

Syrups and Labels

Ok, I know there are super cute and aesthetically pleasing syrup containers out there- but I can’t justify buying them. Pouring out syrup into another container so its cuter just seems like a step too far for me!

So instead, I covered the bottles with my own labels that I ought at Walmart and designed on the Avery website. Cheap, easy, maybe not as cute- but certainly cheaper!

Cream & Sugar

Its been a recent goal of mine to add something vintage or personal to every space in our home.

These glass cream and sugar containers were my great-aunt Victoria’s, and I think of her every time I see them! I like to fill them up with half and half and sugar when we have guests for easy access.
