Beautiful Above Ground Pool Landscaping and Deck Ideas
Are you thinking about putting an above ground pool in your backyard? Or looking to improve the aesthetic of your current set-up? Here are some ideas we’ve collected, along with our own above-ground pool landscaping and deck projects, to help make your above ground pool area look awesome.
We set up an above ground pool last summer and then added a pool deck. We could not be happier with the setup. If you’re able to build a deck around your entire pool, then you may not be too worried about the landscaping around it- some above ground pools with decks look like inground pools! However, if you’re setting the pool up in your back yard with a half deck or no deck at all, the best way to make it look aesthetically pleasing is by adding some landscaping.
Our pool deck covers nearly half of our rectangular pool, so the other sections we covered with rock, and then I planted ferns to partially hide the supports and concrete blocks.
There are several ways to create an attractive above-ground pool space: adding plants, an outdoor seating area, shrubs, a border, outdoor lighting, and more.

Here are a few ideas to help transform your above ground pool area into a beautiful oasis in your backyard!
Pea Gravel and a Privacy Hedge
This rectangular above-ground pool is very similar to ours in shape (and we love our pool!) The homeowner has added pea gravel and a wooden frame to delineate the pool area. Beautiful bushes and flowers surround the pool and a little seating area creates a space for soaking up sun.
Pool-Side Seating Area
This above ground pool is surrounded by greenery, with an outdoor seating area nearby. It takes an otherwise basic pool and creates a visually appealing space.
Retaining Wall With Paver Stones
This pool landscaping makeover is so beautiful- the homeowner added a retaining wall with gray pavers, and then planted shrubs and mulch to complete the look. You can read more about this project here.
Zen Garden
Concrete pavers form a path to this wood-sided pool, and the many plants surrounding it help it to look like its part of the garden.
Retaining Wall Border
This pool area has a small retaining wall to level the ground without sloping. It creates a clearly defined border and a seamless transition from the pool to the rest of the backyard.
Beachy Lounge Area
Adding sand, a beach umbrella, and two lounge chairs give this above ground landscaping a feel of being right next to the ocean.
Small Wood Deck
This above ground pool landscaping has a little of everything! A wood deck that’s big enough for a platform and some seating, a brick pathway, plants, landscaping rocks and lights.
Large Surround Deck
Its hard to tell that this is an above ground pool! The beautiful pool deck spans the entire length of the pool. A hammock and beach umbrella covered table add bright and cheerful amenities.
Pretty View
This above ground pool is set right in the middle of a backyard with a pretty view of the nearby trees. The wooden deck is a great choice to help blend in with the background.
Privacy Hedge
Now that’s a pool with privacy! A pergola with a wood deck gives a great place for lounging, and the fence and hedge offer great privacy.
Garden Path
This pool sits beside a brick pathway, bright flowers and a beautiful garden. Planting trees, shrubs and flowers around the pool area can give a more natural and inviting atmosphere.
Magical Lighting
Potted plants surround this stock tank pool and outdoor lighting creates a warm and inviting ambiance. Also, it makes for enhanced safety and fun nighttime swimming!
Painted Sides
Did you know you can paint your pool? I’ve seen a few of these on Pinterest, and this is my favorite- the black and white paint make such a difference! You can read more about how to paint an above-ground pool here.
