Fun Kids’ Crafts: DIY Mason Jar Snow Globes
Today I’m sharing all about how we created these DIY snow globes with our kids. They had a blast making these, and they continue to have fun shaking them up to see the “snow” swirl around in the mason jar.
This Christmas craft isn’t just for kids, of course, but it is an easy and inexpensive activity to do with little ones.

How To Make DIY Mason Jar Snow Globes
These DIY mason jar snow globes didn’t take long to make, and don’t have a long list of necessary supplies.
We used ceramic Christmas figurines that we bought at a thrift store, but you can use anything that will fit- like those little houses from a Christmas village (a popular item at thrift stores!) or bottle brush trees.
Supplies Needed:
32 oz Wide Mouth Mason Jar with Lid (we used a combination of used and new jars, I found these ones on Amazon.)
White plastic lids (these white plastic lids held glue better than the aluminum ones, we tried both)
Hot Glue Gun and Glue
Figurine/Tree/House/Ornament for inside
Glycerine (or you can substitute with olive, vegetable, or baby oil)
Warm Water
Stirring Spoon or Fork
Glitter
Ribbon
Step One: Glue The Figurine To The Lid
Using your glue gun, apply glue to the bottom of the figurine and attach to the lid. The heavier the object, the more glue you will need!
We used both white and aluminum lids- the white lids held the glue much better!
Step Two: Add Glycerine To The Jar
Add 2 to 3 oz of glycerine to the mason jar. I ended up using just under 1/4 cup. The exact amount isn’t super important.
Glycerine is what allows the glitter to float and fall more slowly, and keeps it from clumping. You can substitue this with oil- olive, vegetable, or baby oil- but I have only used glycerine so I can’t speak to how well those substitutions work.
I bought our glycerine at Walmart for under $4.
Step Three: Fill Jar With Warm Water and Stir
Fill the rest of the mason jar with warm water- leaving about an inch at the top.
You don’t want to overfill the jars, or you’ll end up displacing some of the water when you add in the figurine.
Stir the water and glycerine together.
Step Four: Add The Glitter and Stir
Pour in 2-3 tsp of glitter, and stir vigorously.
The kids loved this step, as the glitter created a tornado in the jar!
Step Five: Attach Lid and Flip Over
Secure the lid onto the jar, and flip the jar over.
Watch the glitter swirl and fall like fresh snow!
Step Six: Make it Festive!
Add a ribbon or a bow to the jar lid, whatever you want to make the mason jar snow globe more festive.
We added red and green bakers twine that I found on Amazon.
Cute, fun and festive!
