Best Travel Trailers For Families (2025)
Road trips and vacations with recreational vehicles are on the rise, with travel trailers being the most popular rv type.
Many families find that traveling with a trailer is one of the most convenient, cost effective, and relaxing ways of spending a vacation as a family.
When searching for a travel trailer for your family, most of us know that you need to determine how many people they sleep, the weight limits, and overall square feet.
But, are these sufficient qualifiers for your specific needs?
And, if you never owned a camper before, how do you KNOW what features are right for your whole family?
We asked over one hundred people who used travel trailers for their families:
“What features are most important in a family travel trailer?”
And, not surprisingly, there were a few features that stood out as the most common must-have options.
Nice-To-Have Travel Trailer Features for Families:
An Outdoor Kitchen
There are tons of benefifts to having an outside kitchen! Just to name a few: extra space, flexibly, a cleaner interior, limit additional high temps inside from cooking appliances, and being able to be together outside.
Many travel trailer models will have a pull-out grill, a sink, storage, countertops and outlets. An indoor kitchen is a must, but an outdoor kitchen is a great feature.
Bunk Beds or a Bunk Rooms for Kids
If you plan to fit a bunch of kids into a small space, you need these space savers. There are a few different configurations available. Some rvs have a separate bunk room, while others might have bunk beds in the slide out. The additional sleeping space doesn’t take up much room at all.
An Outdoor Shower
Even with a full bathroom inside, an outdoor shower offers another option for cleaning off dirty kids and keeping the mess contained to the outside. You can keep all that sand, dirt, and debris out of the rv. We want one at our house!
Many trailers will come with an outdoor spray port as well.
Plenty of Storage
Fitting everything that you need for the entire family is no small thing- so ensuring there is plenty of storage is a must. Many campers on the market today have pass-through storage, which means it runs the length of the rv.
Its a great place to store longer items (fishing poles, for instance!) and it allows access from both sides.
Additionally, you need to ask yourself these questions:
What is the towing capacity on our tow vehicle? You’re limited as to what size of a trailer you can buy based on your type of towing vehicle.
Should we consider fifth wheels? They offer plenty of room, but can only be towed by certain pickup trucks. For this post, we are specifically listing the best bumper pull trailers for families. For 5th wheel options, stay tuned for our next post.
How will we utilize our camper trailer? Will this be for short, weekend trips, where we can be a little more cramped? Or, will we need the indoor space for longer trips or incremental weather?
To make your decision easier, we have compiled a list of the top 9 best family travel trailers for 2024.

What is a bumper pull vs 5th wheel trailer? A bumper pull, or the more common term, towing trailer, is a trailer that can be towed with a standard hitch. A 5th wheel trailer requires a 5th wheel hitch mounted in the bed of the truck.
