Split-Level Kitchen Remodels

When we first walked through our home, we knew right away it was different. Most split levels have a few things in common: a cramped kitchen, a dining room that’s separate and barely usable, and a boxy layout that doesn’t invite you to hang out.

But this house surprised us. The kitchen had already been opened up, and that one decision changed everything.
The previous owners removed the original dining room to stretch the kitchen into that space.
They also took out the wall between the kitchen and living area and replaced it with a single support beam that runs cleanly across the ceiling.

It created one large, open space that feels connected and bright—a layout that’s not easy to find in a traditional split-level home.
Even though the remodel happened before we bought the house, it gave us a lot of ideas for how to make a split-level kitchen feel more modern.

Lighting is a huge game changer. This beautifully renovated kitchen (by Eldridge Lumberyard) has recessed lighting and pendant lights over the island, and they’ve added warm under-cabinet lights.
Older split-levels tend to have dim or dated fixtures, but swapping those out can go a long way in making the space feel fresh and intentional.

Final Thoughts
A kitchen update doesn’t have to mean a full gut remodel.
Sometimes, it’s about working with what you already have—and finding smart ways to open things up, lighten the space, and make the layout actually work for your family.
We feel lucky that someone else made that leap before we got here, but living with this version of a split-level kitchen has taught us just how possible it is to make this kind of house feel open, modern, and completely livable.
If you’re staring down a split-level layout and wondering where to start, the kitchen is a great place to focus your energy.
It sets the tone for the rest of the house—and with a few thoughtful updates, it can completely change how your home feels.
